Sagamore Junior Sailing

Hands-on-learning on one of Long Island's most pristine outdoor classrooms.

Welcome and thank you for your interest in Sagamore Junior Sailing. Registration details for the 2024 program are currently being finalized and general registration is expected to open in mid-March, so check back soon! For 2024 Christine Briggs will be returning as the program director along with much of our experienced coaching staff from last summer. Our sailors will benefit from upgraded equipment, including new sails for our Feva fleet. The program is open to beginner, novice, intermediate, and advanced sailors who are 8 to 18 years of age*. For 2024 we are offering three 2-week long sessions beginning July 1, July 15, and July 29. There will also be a single week-long “add-on” session beginning on August 12, that can be added on to any of the two week sessions.  We strongly encourage signing up for multiple sessions to allow for a more rewarding experience.

* A sailor’s age on December 31, 2024 is considered their age for 2024 program enrollment.

Opti

Designed for beginner sailors, the Optimist (aka Opti) is a great boat to learn how to sail. With no minimum weight requirement and an easy to handle design, sailors of all levels ages 8 to 15 can sail an Opti. The Optimist is a single handed boat, within the first day or two, students learn how to rig Optis, launch them in the water, and learn how to catch the wind and sail. For sailors who are ready, there are opportunities to attend Opti regattas throughout the season. Regattas are a great way to meet other sailors in a fun, competitive environment.

Feva

Older sailors who have outgrown the Opti, or are ready for a boat with two sails can learn on our RS Fevas. The Feva is a modern, fast, double-handed design that offers a high performance sloop (two sails) sail plan. Sailors who turn 11 by December 31st, 2024 are candidate to start sailing in a Feva and those who are 12 and can support a combined minimum crew weight of 180 lbs are ready to compete in this class. Feva sailors also learn to fly a third sail, an asymmetric spinnaker, for even more fun. The Feva is one of the fastest growing junior classes worldwide due to their sturdy, self-bailing, design coupled with exciting performance.

Club 420

420s are great boats for more experienced sailors. These fast and agile boats teach teamwork and perseverance. Similar to the Feva, the 420 has two sails plus a spinnaker but in a larger, more complex, package designed as a stepping stone to the 470, its Olympic-class big brother. High school and Collegiate sailors sail 420s as well, making these boats a great platform for sailors interested in pursuing the sport beyond summer sailing.

Getting Started / Important Information

Registration

The program is open to sailors 8 to 18 years of age and runs daily from 9:30am to 4:30pm. A sailor’s age on December 31, 2024 is considered their age for purposes of 2024 program enrollment.

Two-week sessions start on the following days:  July 1, July 15, July 29
Optional one-week add-on session starts: August 12

There is no camp on Thursday July 4th. The August 12 one-week session can only be added-on to one of the two-week sessions, it cannot be registered for separately.

Sailors are required to participate in a swim test and receive pre-sailing safety instruction that only occurs on the first day of each two-week session. Thus, all sailors must attend the first day of their first session of the summer.

Pricing information and cancellation policies can all be viewed on the 2024 Pricing Information sheet linked above. Registration is not complete until full payment is made and the Waiver and the Code of Conduct are signed. Sagamore Junior Sailing is a volunteer-run, non-profit, organization and is dependent on volunteers to help keep costs low. Parents are invited and encouraged to participate in volunteer assignments. We have jobs for everyone – whether it is preseason rigging of the boats and launching, helping with mid-season maintenance, or helping de-rig and store boats for the winter. No experience is necessary. We will be sending emails out to registrants on a periodic basis to make you aware of the opportunities. Many hands make light work!
