Designed for beginner sailors, the Optimist (aka Opti) is a great boat to learn how to sail. Sailors ages 8 to 15 can sail an Opti. Within the first day or two, students learn how to rig Optis, launch them in the water, and learn how to catch the wind and sail. We attend many Opti regattas throughout the season. Regattas are a great way to meet other sailors in a fun, competitive environment.
Sailors who have outgrown the Opti, or are ready for a boat with two sails can learn on our RS Fevas. The Feva is a modern, fast, double-handed design that offers a high performance sloop (two sails) sail plan. When ready, Feva sailors can also learn to fly a third sail, an asymmetric spinnaker, for even more fun. The Feva is one of the fastest growing junior classes worldwide due to their sturdy, self-bailing, design coupled with exciting performance.
420s are great boats for more experienced sailors. These fast and agile boats teach teamwork and perseverance. Similar to the Feva the 420 has two sails plus a spinnaker but in a larger, more complex, package designed as a stepping stone to the 470, its Olympic class big brother. High school and collegiate sailors sail 420s as well, making these boats a great platform for sailors interesting in pursuing the sport beyond summer sailing.
Getting Started / Important Information
The registration process is performed within Clubspot. This online club management tool helps us to centralize all of our registration documentation and payment processing in one location. Pro tip: once you’ve clicked the registration link below, we strongly recommend creating an account versus signing up as a guest — this way you can always revisit your profile and make updates as needed.
For their first session of the summer, all sailors are required to start on the first week of one of the 2-week long sessions. Sailors are required to participate in a swim test and receive pre-sailing safety instruction that only occurs on the first day of each session. The program is open to sailors 8 to 17 years of age and runs daily from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Sessions start on the following days: June 27 (full), July 11 (full), July 25 (full), and August 8 (full).
After the initial 2-week long session, you can sign-up for as many additional weeks as you like. These additional weeks do not have to be in sequence.
If any documents are incomplete or the weeks chosen did not follow the guidelines above and need to be revised, we will contact you for a follow up. If you have any questions, please email us at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Sagamore Junior Sailing is a volunteer-run, non-profit, organization and is dependent on volunteers to help keep costs low. Parents are invited and encouraged to participate in volunteer assignments. We have jobs for everyone – whether it is preseason rigging of the boats and launching, slinging hot dogs at the end of season barbeque, or helping derig and store boats for the winter. No experience is necessary. We will be sending emails out to registrants on a periodic basis to make you aware of the opportunities. Many hands make light work!
